Workers remove sargassum seaweed from the beach in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, during May 2019. Shoveling or bulldozing up sargassum once it washes up on shore is a herculean task, as it returns hours later. Victor Ruiz / Associated Press

Skift Take: Mexico’s recently elected president Andrés Manuel López Obrador needs to take more serious action to combat the massive stinky piles of sargassum, a type of seaweed, arriving in coastal towns like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Otherwise the damage to the area’s tourism reputation and ecosystem may linger for years.
